Add Watermark to PDF
PDF ToolsAdd customizable text watermarks to every page of a PDF with control over font, color, size, opacity, rotation, and position.. Free, private — all processing in your browser.
Select multiple PDF files. All processing happens in your browser.
The PDF Watermark tool adds text watermarks across every page (or selected pages) of a PDF document. Protect copyright on published documents, mark drafts before review circulation, brand outgoing PDFs with your company name, or add \\\"CONFIDENTIAL\\\" overlay to sensitive documents. Configure appearance with font family, size, color, opacity, rotation angle, and position.
Upload your PDF, enter watermark text, customize appearance, choose placement (center, corner, diagonal, tiled, or custom position), and download. Options to apply to all pages or specific ranges. Watermarks are added as native PDF text (not rasterized), keeping file size small and preserving text searchability. All processing runs in your browser so original documents stay private.

Technical details
PDF watermarking adds text or images as an overlay on existing pages. Using pdf-lib:
1. Parse PDF
2. For each page in target range:
- Get page dimensions and existing content
- Draw watermark text on top with specified font, size, color, opacity
- Apply transforms (rotation, position)
3. Save modified PDF
Text is added as actual PDF text (not rasterized), so:
- File size stays small
- Watermark text is selectable and searchable
- Quality is perfect at any zoom
Font embedding: to use non-standard fonts, the font must be embedded. Standard PDF fonts (Helvetica, Times, Courier, and their variants) are built into readers; custom fonts need embedding. This adds to file size.
Opacity: set fill color with alpha for transparent effect. Common watermark opacity is 20-50% for visibility without overwhelming content.
Position options:
- Center: prominent, hard to ignore
- Corner: subtle, copyright-style placement
- Header/footer: thin watermark at top or bottom of each page
- Diagonal: rotated 30-45 degrees for dramatic \\\"DRAFT\\\" look
- Tiled: repeated across whole page, hardest to remove
Rotation: applying angle like -45 for diagonal watermarks. Text is drawn with transform matrix applied.
Z-order: watermark can be below original content (background, hard to remove) or above (foreground, obvious). Above is more visible; below can be more professional.
Per-page options: different watermarks on different pages, or skip specific pages like cover pages.
Image watermarks: logos or signature images embedded as PDF images overlaid on pages. This tool focuses on text; for image watermarks, use a more advanced tool.
Performance: watermarking is relatively fast — adding text to existing pages. 100-page PDFs watermark in seconds.
Security note: text watermarks can be removed by image-level PDF editors (but removing requires re-saving PDF). They deter casual sharing, don\u2019t prevent determined extraction. For real protection, use encryption + DRM, not just watermarks.
Common problems and solutions
⚠Watermark hidden by existing content
Dark documents may obscure watermarks. Use contrasting color (white on dark, dark on light) and higher opacity for visibility.
⚠Too prominent
Heavy watermarks make documents hard to read. Balance opacity and size — 20-40% opacity with moderate size usually works.
⚠Custom font not embedded
Using fonts beyond standard 14 (Helvetica, Times, etc.) requires font embedding, which adds to file size. Stick to standard fonts for smaller output.
⚠Rotation around text origin
Default rotation pivots around text origin, which may position text off-center. Adjust position after rotation or use center-origin rotation if available.
⚠Watermark obscures important details
Center watermarks can cover signatures, images, or key text. Position in margins or use opacity to compromise.
⚠Removable by re-saving
Watermarks added as text layer can be removed by PDF editors. For strong protection, use image-based watermarks or rasterize final PDF (but that loses text selectability).
⚠Inconsistent rendering
Different PDF viewers may render watermarks slightly differently. Preview in multiple readers (Adobe Reader, Chrome PDF viewer, etc.) for critical documents.
Add Watermark to PDF — comparisons and alternatives
Compared to Adobe Acrobat Pro\u2019s watermark feature, this tool is free and browser-based. Acrobat offers image watermarks and more formatting; this tool covers text watermarks completely.
Compared to flattening PDF to images and watermarking, this tool preserves text searchability and quality. Rasterizing loses searchable text and quality.
Compared to online PDF watermark services, this tool runs entirely in your browser without upload. Keep documents private.
Frequently asked questions about the Add Watermark to PDF
▶How do I watermark a PDF?
Upload, enter watermark text, customize appearance (font, color, opacity, rotation), choose position, and download. Every page in the selected range receives the watermark.
▶Can I watermark every page?
Yes, that’s the default. You can also specify ranges (e.g., pages 1-10) or skip specific pages like cover sheets.
▶Is the watermark permanent?
It’s added as PDF text, which can be removed by PDF editors. For maximum permanence, rasterize the watermarked PDF (convert to image-based), but that loses text searchability.
▶What opacity works best?
20-40% for professional documents (visible but not overwhelming). 50-70% for strong branding or \"DRAFT\" markings. 80-100% for maximum visibility.
▶Can I watermark a password-protected PDF?
You need the password to modify. Provide it during upload, and the tool can add watermark. Output is unprotected unless you re-encrypt.
▶Does the watermark increase file size?
Minimally. Text watermarks add a few KB per page for the text data. Font embedding (for non-standard fonts) adds more. Typical overhead: 10-50 KB total.
▶Is my PDF private?
Yes. All watermarking runs in your browser. PDFs never leave your machine — safe for confidential legal, financial, or business documents.
▶Can I add image watermarks?
This tool supports text watermarks. For image/logo watermarks, use a more advanced PDF editor that supports image overlays.
