Technical details

Cup definitions vary by region:

US customary cup: 236.588 ml (often rounded to 237 ml). Standard in US recipes.

US legal cup (nutrition labels): exactly 240 ml. FDA standard for nutrition facts.

Metric cup (Australia, some European): 250 ml. Round number, used in metric-converted recipes.

UK imperial cup: 284.131 ml. Based on imperial fluid ounces, rarely used in modern UK baking.

Coffee cup (for coffee machines): 150 ml often used. Different from kitchen cup.

Japanese cup: 200 ml.

For cooking, the relevant ones are US (most online recipes), UK (British cookbooks), and metric (Australia, some European).

Common cup fractions:
- 1 cup = 237 ml (US)
- 3/4 cup = 177.5 ml
- 2/3 cup = 158 ml
- 1/2 cup = 118 ml
- 1/3 cup = 79 ml
- 1/4 cup = 59 ml
- 1/8 cup = 29.5 ml

Related kitchen volumes:
- 1 tablespoon (Tbsp) = 15 ml US = 14.8 ml exactly
- 1 teaspoon (tsp) = 5 ml
- 1 fluid ounce = 29.57 ml
- 1 pint = 473 ml (US) / 568 ml (UK)
- 1 quart = 946 ml (US) / 1136 ml (UK)
- 1 gallon = 3785 ml (US) / 4546 ml (UK)

Cup = 16 tablespoons = 48 teaspoons (US).

Weight vs volume: recipes may call for ounces (weight) or fluid ounces (volume). Not the same thing. Flour by weight is different from flour by volume because flour density varies.

Precision for cooking: cup measurements are inherently imprecise (packing density of flour, sifted vs not). Minor rounding in conversion doesn\u2019t matter for most recipes.

Temperature: water volume changes slightly with temperature (denser when cold). Irrelevant for cooking precision.

Dry vs liquid cups: US has separate dry measuring cups (for flour, sugar) and liquid measuring cups. Volume is the same, but dry cups are designed to be filled flush with straight edge; liquid have pour spouts. Tool converts volume; the difference matters for measurement technique, not math.

Common problems and solutions

US vs UK cups

US cup (237 ml) differs from UK (284 ml). Recipes’ origin matters. Online recipes usually mean US unless specified. UK cookbooks use UK cup.

Dry vs liquid measurement

Volume is the same, but measuring technique differs. Dry cups fill flush; liquid cups have spouts. Both measure same volume.

Ounces confusion

Ounces can be weight (dry ingredients) or fluid ounces (volume). Clarify context; flour in ounces by weight is very different from flour in fluid ounces by volume.

Flour packing

Flour measured by cups varies 15-20% based on packing. Sifted vs scooped vs spooned changes weight significantly. Weigh for precise baking.

Tablespoon size

US tablespoon 15 ml vs UK 15 ml vs Australia 20 ml. Check source before converting.

Rounding accumulation

Multiple conversions with rounding may drift from exact. For scientific accuracy, use exact factors; for cooking, rounding is fine.

Temperature not considered

Water at 4°C is densest. At 20°C it’s slightly less dense. For cooking, ignore this. For scientific work, consider.

Cups to ML — comparisons and alternatives

Compared to memorizing conversion factors, this tool is instant and handles multiple cup definitions. Memorization is error-prone.

Compared to kitchen measuring cups with markings, this tool works for any amount and converts between regions. Physical cups are limited to their markings.

Compared to phone calculator, this tool handles fractions and scaled recipes naturally.

Frequently asked questions about the Cups to ML

How many ml in a cup?

US cup = 237 ml (236.588 exactly). UK cup = 284 ml. Metric cup = 250 ml. Use based on recipe origin.

How many tablespoons in a cup?

16 US tablespoons = 1 US cup. 1 tbsp = 15 ml.

Is the US and UK cup the same?

No. US cup is 237 ml, UK cup is 284 ml (20% larger). Doesn’t affect simple recipes much but makes a difference for baking.

Why does my flour recipe fail?

Flour measured by cups varies with packing. Sifted flour: less per cup. Scooped flour: more per cup. For baking precision, weigh flour (1 cup all-purpose ≈ 120-125g).

How do I scale a recipe?

Multiply all ingredients by scale factor. Want half of a 4-cup recipe? Multiply each ingredient by 0.5. Use this tool to convert final amounts.

Is my data private?

Yes. All conversion runs in your browser.

Can I convert dry measurements?

This tool handles volume only. For weight (grams of flour), you need to know ingredient density. Different ingredients weigh differently per cup.

What about metric cups?

250 ml metric cup is used in Australia and some European recipes. Different from US 237 ml. Check recipe source.
