Technical details
Speed conversion reduces to exact ratio math once you use the standard definitions. The base relationships are:
1 km/h = 1000 m / 3600 s = 0.2777... m/s exactly
1 mph = 1609.344 m / 3600 s = 0.44704 m/s exactly
1 ft/s = 0.3048 m/s exactly (since 1959 inch definition)
1 knot = 1852 m / 3600 s = 0.5144... m/s exactly
All conversions between imperial and metric speed units are exact rational numbers thanks to the 1959 international yard-pound agreement. Round-trip conversion (km/h to mph and back) returns the exact original value within double-precision floating-point accuracy.
Knots deserve special note: one knot equals one nautical mile per hour, and one nautical mile is defined as exactly 1852 meters internationally (since 1929). This ties the knot to meridian geometry — a speed of 60 knots covers one degree of latitude per hour. Aviation and maritime navigation use knots because charts are indexed by arc-degrees and minutes of arc. Wind speed in weather reports is also often reported in knots for consistency with aviation weather.
Mach number is dimensionless — it is a ratio of object speed to the speed of sound in the surrounding medium. Speed of sound varies with temperature, humidity, and altitude. The converter uses the international standard atmosphere sea-level value (343.2 m/s at 20 °C, 1.23 km/m³ air density). At 11 km altitude (typical cruising altitude), the speed of sound drops to about 295 m/s because of colder air, so Mach 0.85 cruise is a different absolute speed at altitude than at sea level. The tool notes this caveat but reports sea-level conversion by default.

⚠Knots vs mph confusion
